The Haunting of Hill Top Manor
Inspiration
The inspiration for The Haunting of Hill Top Manor came from a desire to create a horror experience that would genuinely frighten players and leave a lasting impression. While exploring experiences in Horizon Worlds, I noticed that many horror games relied primarily on jump scares. I wanted to create something deeper—an immersive horror experience built on atmosphere, suspense, exploration, and storytelling.
As I began designing the characters and developing the backstory, the project quickly grew into a larger vision. Creating the witch, her children, and their mysterious alien father inspired an original storyline that motivated me to build a detailed world filled with secrets, danger, and supernatural encounters.
What It Does
The Haunting of Hill Top Manor is a survival horror experience set on a dark, isolated hill deep within a dense forest. Players begin their journey at the base of the hill and must navigate through the darkness using only a flashlight, a pistol, and whatever resources they can discover along the way.
At the top of the hill stands Hill Top Manor, a massive abandoned mansion with no electricity and countless secrets hidden within its walls. The manor is home to a witch, her children, and their alien father, whose presence has cursed the surrounding land.
The woods, hill, and mansion are haunted by undead creatures and the restless spirits of previous victims who ventured into the manor and never returned. As players explore the environment, they must search for clues, uncover the dark history of the family, solve mysteries, and survive relentless supernatural threats.
Every dark hallway, hidden room, and shadow-filled corner presents new dangers. The game is designed to create tension through exploration, limited resources, environmental storytelling, and unexpected encounters that keep players on edge throughout their experience.
How We Built It
The world was created using a combination of AI-assisted asset generation and custom world-building techniques. AI tools were used to help generate the forest environment, hill terrain, and character concepts, allowing for rapid prototyping and creative exploration.
The manor itself was constructed from the ground up using shapes and building tools within Horizon Worlds. Significant effort has gone into designing the layout to create an engaging balance between exploration, suspense, and gameplay progression. Additional assets and environments continue to be developed to expand the experience and support future updates.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges has been designing a mansion that feels large enough to encourage exploration while remaining focused and engaging for players. Finding the right balance between size, pacing, and gameplay flow is critical to maintaining suspense without making the experience feel repetitive.
Another major challenge involves scripting and character animation. Developing enemy behaviors that allow characters to intelligently pursue players through hallways, around corners, and up staircases without clipping through walls has required ongoing testing and refinement.
Creating believable enemy movement and AI interactions remains one of the most technically demanding aspects of the project, but it is also one of the features that will contribute most to the overall horror experience.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
One of the project's biggest accomplishments is the completion of the manor itself, which serves as the centerpiece of the experience. The atmosphere created within the mansion already delivers a strong sense of tension and mystery, especially when experienced in VR.
Development is also underway on a maze system located beneath the manor, which will introduce additional exploration, puzzles, and challenges for players. The necessary assets have already been prepared, and work continues on integrating the maze into the overall game experience.
Additionally, a companion experience titled Clothes Store Near the Haunting of Hill Top Manor has been created to promote the game through themed avatar apparel inspired by its characters and story. Sound design and environmental audio are also being developed to further enhance immersion and amplify the game's unsettling atmosphere.
What We Learned
Throughout development, I learned how important atmosphere, sound, environmental design, and storytelling are in creating effective horror. As the world has grown, I have found myself becoming increasingly immersed in its eerie environment, which has reinforced my confidence that the experience will successfully create fear and suspense for players.
I have also gained valuable experience in world-building, AI-assisted content creation, scripting, level design, and balancing exploration with gameplay objectives. Continuous improvements to textures, environmental details, and visual effects are helping bring the vision of Hill Top Manor to life.
What's Next for The Haunting of Hill Top Manor
The next phase of development will focus on expanding gameplay systems and increasing replayability. Planned features include player and enemy health systems, leaderboards, rewards, and progression mechanics that encourage players to return and improve their performance.
To make each playthrough feel unique, collectible items and objectives will be randomized so they do not appear in the same locations every time. This will encourage exploration and prevent players from relying on memorized routes.
Future updates will also introduce cooperative gameplay improvements, including a revive system that allows teammates to rescue one another after being downed. Additional enemy behaviors, sound effects, environmental storytelling elements, and new areas such as the underground maze will continue to expand the experience.
The ultimate goal is to create a memorable and terrifying horror adventure that keeps players immersed, challenged, and eager to uncover every dark secret hidden within Hill Top Manor.
