Inspiration

Halloween has always been about mystery, surprise, and a touch of fear — and we wanted to bring that same energy into the digital world. Instead of creating a traditional website, we built an experience that feels alive, unpredictable, and a little bit cursed — just like stumbling upon a haunted terminal or a ghost-infected server on a dark October night.

What it does

Cursed Code is a haunted webpage that starts off normal and slowly reveals its spooky nature. As users explore, the site:

Glitches randomly like it's “possessed”

Plays eerie ambient sounds and whispers

Shows floating ghosts and flickering lights

Displays hidden messages and warnings

Reacts to user actions with unexpected scares & visual distortions

It's a Halloween digital “haunting” disguised as a simple webpage

How we built it

Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript

Animations: CSS animation & glitch effects + JavaScript triggers

Audio: Ambient creepy sound loops and triggered effects

Interaction: Click events trigger scares and distort content

We kept it lightweight — no heavy frameworks — to keep the experience smooth and eerie.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing spooky effects without overwhelming the user

Timing audio with visual scares

Keeping animations random, unpredictable, yet controlled

Making glitch effects look natural instead of chaotic or messy

Ensuring compatibility across browsers

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully created a haunted website experience instead of just a themed design

Pulled off realistic glitch animations and surprise scares

Built something that is fun, creepy, and interactive — with minimal code

Created a unique Halloween digital experience

What we learned

How to combine UI effects + timing + sound design to create emotion

Creative glitch techniques using CSS + JS

Designing interactions that surprise users — without traditional storytelling

Keeping users engaged through subtle horror elements instead of jump scares alone

What's next for Cursed Code

Add multiple “haunted modes” (mild → intense horror)

Add AI-generated ghost whispers and dynamic messages

Turn it into a series of spooky digital rooms (like a horror museum)

Add secret puzzles or lore hidden in the code

Provide a “Halloween Prank Link” mode to scare friends
