Inspiration

Despite India being the largest producer of milk, pulses, bananas, and second-largest producer of wheat, rice, and vegetables in the world, yet it is placed as low as 107th rank, out of 121 countries in the level of hunger and undernutrition according to the Global Hunger Index 2022. So, we have come up with an idea to build an app that helps in food waste management.

What it does

The solution involves an Android app named “NutriNeed” which will enable users from hotels/restaurants/weddings/events to register, login, and upload an image of the meals they have as leftovers along with a description of that meal, and the location where to pick it up.  The app would thereby assist the nearby NGO’s in collecting the leftover food from hotels, restaurants, weddings, events, etc. and distribute it to any local charity or to those who are in need. Also, any public user in need can also see all the food images donated by different users and add it to his or her cart.

How we built it

We have built it using Android studio using java language, firebase Authentication and real-time-database.

Challenges we ran into

We faced difficulties with linking the firebase to the app. However, we were able to figure it out later.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We were able to successfully create an app that helps in food waste management.
  2. Successful implementation of firebase login.
  3. High speed data updation on real time data base.

What we learned

  1. Usage of Android Studio.
  2. Linking of firebase, cloud firestore and real-time-database to the Android App.

What's next for The Hackstreet Girls

1.Accessing complete database of all restaurants, charities and other important stakeholders to increase the range of operation of this system.  2.Advertising the system and gaining attention of more restaurants and food donors. 3.Making the app more accessible to the underprivileged. 4.Enhancing the app compatibility and turning it into a cross - platform app
