This system is designed to continuously monitor residential rooms where falling accidents are common, such as the kitchen and bathroom. The system uses the Kinect's body-tracking software to determine the orientation of up to 6 people per room. If a person has been detected to be lying on the ground for a certain period of time, the sensor transmits a message to HipChat (an online chat service) that notifies anyone connected to the network. The message is further used to trigger a central monitoring station that is always active.
Current technology, such as Life Alert (R), require that the person in need of assistance be conscious or physically able to press a button. In many cases, the individual is rendered helpless by the fall and may suffer serious injuries or even death before they are found.
This system, the Guardian Angel, provides continuous, non-intrusive monitoring as it only notifies the network in the event of a fall.
