Inspiration

What inspired us to materialize this idea was that the number of environmentally conscious people is increasing. With the increase in wanting to participate in green initiatives, there is currently no good solution to promote green initiatives happening worldwide. According to a study in the UK done by the World Economic Forum, 16% of Gen Z respondents said it was too costly to invest in sustainability, and 15% of respondents said they wanted more information before considering lifestyle changes. (https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/03/generation-z-sustainability-lifestyle-buying-decisions/) Our app will allow people to realize how inexpensive investing in sustainability is and how easy it is to make the world a better place.

What it does

Sprout is an app that allows users to invest in green initiatives without noticing. Our app connects with your debit/credit card so that funds will be given towards their project of choice when a transaction has been made and contribute towards green initiatives. Our users can choose which project they would like to contribute to.

How we built it

We developed the backend of sprout by taking the user’s name, credit card info, and transaction history into python code. The program will round up the transaction amount to the nearest dollar. The added money from rounding will be sent directly to green initiatives. The user’s info will also be stored and updated in the user’s unique excel sheet and secured into the Google cloud storage database.

Challenges we ran into

We initially had trouble setting up a server, but with hard work and dedication, we were able to persevere and get our server to run. Another thing that we found challenging was linking the front end with the back end - particularly sending data back and forth.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some of the accomplishments we are proud of is creating a server in which we can translate input into the output on the HTML; this was entirely new for all of us. On that note of new experiences, all of us were first-time hackers, so being able to develop something and submit something was something that we all took pride in.

What we learned

We learned that being a front-end developer, there is much hard work involved, which none of us had previous experience with. Learned a lot of various programming languages like REACT and Flask. Although there was a learning curve, we managed to understand its capabilities and make use when necessary.

What's next for Sprout

Eventually, we plan on making a feature that will allow users to customize how much they would like to contribute. We hope that Sprout will have the opportunity to have more features as time goes on.
