Inspiration
In this age of the internet, teens are bombarded with information about the world they live in. With that comes the understanding that the our future is looking damp. Now when in a dire situation it is the time to take action which our team has decided to do.
What it does
This project aims to support our clients in their journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle leading to a prosperous world. We believe that individual actions can build towards a greater project, and our crowdsourcing problem solver emulates this idea. Clients can submit images or data of problems relevant to the environment. Using their submitted information, we can work alongside professionals to address these problems and work towards a solution. Additionally, the Do a Deed feature helps encourage and inform clients on practices they can have to live a sustainable lifestyle by offering random easy to follow quips of advice.
How we built it
From the start we decided that the purpose was to encourage eco-friendly behavior through an interactive website. After brainstorming, we came up with a satisfying list of features we believed would be essential in helping us achieve our goal. We then began to work after assigning each other individual parts. Once we had achieved our separate objectives, we were attentive to ensure that all our individual parts would flow together into one cohesive unit.
Challenges we ran into
We tried to implement a database into our website that would allow people to submit their own reports of problems with a text description and image upload. While creating this, we had trouble with receiving the data from people on the website. Another main issue was the design of the site itself, which we had to test and refine. Finally, our interactive elements utilizing Velo took some time to learn how to make, but we were eventually able to create a satisfying and engaging user experience with our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Using JavaScript and the Velo API’s, we were able to create a variety of features on our website that allows it to stand out compared to other sites. Our interesting animations (such as our graphs and headers) and interactive elements (like our randomized prompts, map, and submission feature) helped us go beyond the normal limits of Wix’s website designing tools.
What we learned
This website allowed us to gain some experience using JS and Velo to build Wix websites, and our project helped us develop an idea of how to call people to take action towards an important issue such as climate change. We also learned some ways to visualize data in the form of graphs, maps, and spreadsheet databases.
What's next for The Green Hand Website
We hope to integrate a machine learning algorithm to sort images and other forms of data we receive by similarity of problem and location. Additionally, we would like to provide our clients with information on the problems demonstrated in the information they provided. Moreover, we would like to partner with other prominent environmentalist groups to achieve our common goal of protecting the planet.
