Inspiration

In the midst of New York City's urban sprawl lie hidden green sanctuaries, offering unexpected respites from the bustling city life. They offer so much more than much-needed green spaces in the city; these small green communities can bring entire neighborhoods access to fresh food. Food deserts, sadly, are common in the United States. Community gardens can improve food security by providing access to fresh, nutritious produce, especially in food-insecure neighborhoods or areas with limited access to grocery stores. In addition, they serve as educational hubs where people can learn about gardening, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. By joining a community garden, you can get to know your neighbors and strengthen social ties. These events hosted by the gardens often go unnoticed. Most residents of a neighborhood will miss out because the knowledge is spread through word of mouth. We wanted to build a platform where all the little gardens can come together and post their events on our website.

What it does

The Green Garden Network connects people to their local community garden. This occurs through features that allow you to look for the gardens closest to you, a page full of upcoming events, and a directory of the already established organizations. New organizations will be able to sign up and start posting events. In addition, it is easy to volunteer by clicking on the google form on the events page.

How we built it

We started thinking about our ideas and put it all in a design document. Then we wrote up the structure of our website on a whiteboard. To create the layout of the navigation bar as well as the homepage, we used Figma. We started off using Replit to code, but we quickly realized that it would not be enough to hold our project. Although we didn't have much experience with Github, we were able to use it to code as a team.

Challenges we ran into

When we tried to parse a csv file full of all the community gardens in the city, we failed. Thus, the map shows a limited amount of locations. None of us have used an API before either; the process of navigating through even the basics was confusing. In addition, two of us were really inexperienced with React; it took a lot of trial and error to figure things out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to make a working website in a single day! We struggled with managing our time properly, but in the end we were able to complete our respective tasks. We are most proud of our use of the google maps API.

What we learned

We learned about what it means to work as a newly formed team under a very short time period. We were a mixed team of both beginners and people with slightly more experience. However, we spent a lot of time reading information and watching videos about how to style our website and we are all more acquainted with React as a result.

What's next for The Green Garden Network

1) We need a database for the log in and the sign up page 2) We wanted to implement search features in the search map, event, and organization pages. 3) We want to reach out to community gardens and discuss collaborating!
