Inspiration
Members of the team understand the necessity of understanding basic math skills from a young age. We wanted to design a program that hones in young students' math skills while providing an entertaining experience!
What it does
Our platformer is a level where the user attempts to encounter the enemy, or boss, where they will be presented a math problem. The player then has to answer the math problem to "defeat" the boss.
How we built it
Our platformer uses the Python module PyGame to provide a GUI for the user. Players can use WASD buttons to move and must collide with the boss to prompt the math question or boss encounter.
Challenges we ran into
Not everybody on the team was familiar with Python. We had issues learning PyGame and implementing buttons and popups on the screen. The development process got very complicated when we wanted to ask the user to enter the answer to the math problem. Unfortunately, in the current Greater than Gators build, we cannot handle user input. We will attempt to correct this after the hackathon is complete.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a functional and aesthetically pleasing GUI and first level. We have good movement and collision. We all put in many hours on backend and front end design and because of this our team bonded and learned how to better cooperate with each other.
What we learned
Basics of video game development, Python development, group collaboration.
What's next for The Greater Than Gators
We hope to have our game handle user-input in a later build. We will also work on the collision to make the game feel truer to its looks.
