The Great Filter | A Sci-Fi AI Film

Inspiration

I was inspired by the Great Filter theory proposed by economist Robin Hanson as a response to the Fermi Paradox, which basically highlights the question of how strange it is that in an observable universe so immeasurably large and with such a high statistical probability of extraterrestrial life existing, no traces of it have yet been observed.

I think there is a possibility that the great technological filter for biological civilizations may lie in their own creations, particularly the greatest creation of our time: artificial intelligence.

What it does

This film aims to raise awareness about the critical need for AI alignment in the safe development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial superintelligence (ASI). It underscores the existential risks posed by their uncontrolled advancement.

How we built it

The entire project was created using artificial intelligence tools, including image,video and audio generation platforms and models such as nanobanana, google Veo, Elevenlabs,among others.

Challenges we ran into

The consistent management of cameras and shots, as well as maintaining the consistency of the characters and the narrative, was a significant challenge, especially considering that one of my priorities for this project was to maximize the use of image-to-video and minimize the use of frame-to-frame tools . Another significant challenge was to be able to incorporate the character's dream sequences. We also incorporated cinematic flashbacks and visual epiphanies, which added layers of complexity to the production process.

Accomplishments we're proud of

Creating a film that delivers a scientific message without feeling overly dense or academic, while skillfully integrating a diverse array of AI-generated elements and storytelling techniques.

What we learned

I've substantially improved my knowledge and use of all the tools for creating content with artificial intelligence, but more importantly, I honed my ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines, given the time constraints of free trial periods. This pushed me to be even more creative and be able to meet my goal on time.

What's next for The Great Filter | A Sci-Fi AI Film

I've been thinking that While the core message of The Great Filter has been conveyed effectively, perhaps outside of some aesthetic refinements, I would incorporate an additional post-credits scene.This would show a view from Earth's perspective of what's happening on the space station. It turns out that the protagonist scientist has been under surveillance by concerned contacts. Perhaps it's time for the descendants of the legendary inventor Nikola Tesla, helped by aligned AI , to revive the concept of the death ray to confront this new threat.
