Inspiration
The Golden Quina was inspired by a story I wrote years ago, set in colonial-era Colombia, just before independence. It imagines a world where faith, science, and love intertwine—where the search for healing becomes a quiet rebellion. Through the lens of magical realism, the film turns the invented plant "the golden quina" into a symbol of love that transcends reason, empire, and time.
What it does
The film explores how artificial intelligence can express emotion and recreate a forgotten world. It blends AI-generated visuals, voice, and music to evoke a colonial dreamscape where the boundary between history and imagination dissolves. At its core, it tells a story about love breaking through the walls of faith, duty, and mortality.
How we built it
- Visuals: Generated entirely with KlingAI, combining colonial textures, natural light, and surreal transitions.
- Voice-over: Created with ElevenLabs, giving emotional depth and human tone to the narration.
- Music: Composed through Suno, merging organic melodies with cinematic ambient sound.
- Editing & Color: Finalized in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a cohesive, dreamlike rhythm.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring AI visuals felt consistent and alive across scenes.
- Balancing historical realism with the poetic abstraction of magical realism.
- Blending voice and music in a way that felt organic and emotional rather than synthetic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Transforming a literary work into a cinematic experience using AI tools while keeping its emotional and historical essence intact. Seeing how each tool contributed to the storytelling—not as automation, but as artistic collaboration—was a highlight.
What we learned
That AI can extend the reach of human creativity without replacing it. Guided by intention, it becomes a partner in expressing emotion, atmosphere, and memory. I learned how to translate metaphor into image and rhythm, and how technology can echo the human heart.
What's next for The Golden Quina
I plan to expand this project into a small series exploring other colonial and post-independence stories through AI cinema, deepening the dialogue between Latin American identity, love, and technology. Future iterations will experiment with interactive soundscapes and bilingual narration to reach wider audiences.
