Inspiration
Under the theme "the past", our group had brainstormed different ideas that possibly connect to our memories. While brainstorming, the idea of making a "Flash-game" type of game stood out from all the ideas. The Flash game deeply connects to the theme "The past" since it is a common childhood memory shared by our generation. The project's difficulty is also suitable for all group members. The Gold Rush background is inspired by the mining Flash game we have all played before, although it is also a part of history. We decided to present this memorable game with the new game engine Godot and our original artwork.
What it does
The Gold Rush is a single-player game; the player will play as a gold digger and earn money from selling the ore they mine. After a period of time, the player has to spend money to pay the rent. If they don’t have enough money to pay the rent, the game ends. The player can also buy equipment in the different shops to buff themselves.
How we built it
For the pixel art that is used in the game characters and environment, we used Pixilart to create old-fashioned pixel illustrations and used Gimp to construct tiles for the tile maps. The code was written in Godot, based on features and requirements we set for ourselves, testing as we built the project.
Challenges we ran into
For two of our team members, Godot was a completely new software and programming language. Thus, they faced the challenge of learning and adapting to the tools, causing trouble when contributing to the project. Even so, two of them resolved the problem by self-learning tutorials and the Godot docs, and they still managed to contribute.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment that we're proud of is the originality of the entire project. We did not use AI to write code, and nearly all images were created during this hackathon by our teammate. Excluding Godot and programs used to make the assets. Also, as an ad–hoc team of beginners, completing this hackathon is also rewarding.
What we learned
For computer programming, two of our teammates were learning and building experience on the technical skills of using Godot and git. Moreover, we practice graphic design skills with drawing detailed tile maps and complete high-quality pixel art, which are also completely new to us.
What's next for The Gold Rush
We plan to add features that couldn't make it due to time constraints. For example, more buildings, multiplayer support, a world map, multiple towns & mines, enemies, extra upgrades & items.
