Inspiration

The project was inspired by the fragility of life and how trauma can strike unexpectedly, even in seemingly perfect circumstances. I wanted to explore the idea that memories can haunt us and that a single moment can alter an entire life. The visual language of red threads connecting past and present became a metaphor for memory, grief, and the enduring bond between a child and her parent.

What it does

The Girl with the Red Spool is a short AI-generated animation that tells the story of a young girl navigating the aftermath of a tragic event. It visualizes her memories, the consequences of her actions, and her struggle to reconcile with the past. Red threads weave through the ruined space station, connecting the girl to moments from her childhood, culminating in a powerful emotional release.

How we built it

The animation was created using AI image generation tools, combined with manual sequencing and editing to create a narrative flow. Scenes were generated individually, focusing on mood, color, and composition, then assembled to convey a continuous, emotionally resonant story. I used the AI to experiment with perspective, lighting, and surreal elements, allowing the story to visually represent psychological states.

Challenges we ran into

AI sometimes interprets imagery literally, which led to unexpected placements (for example, the thread connecting to shadowed areas). These “mistakes” required me to think creatively and reframe scenes so that they enhanced the story’s themes rather than distracting from them. Another challenge was conveying complex emotional storytelling through short sequences generated by AI, which demanded careful composition and pacing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that the project translates deep emotional experiences into a visual narrative, making abstract feelings like guilt, grief, and memory tangible. The red thread motif consistently ties the scenes together, and the animation evokes strong reactions despite being AI-generated. It is a cohesive, two-minute story with a clear arc and emotional impact.

What we learned

I learned how to use AI creatively for storytelling, not just image generation. I explored how framing, color, and recurring visual motifs can communicate abstract concepts like memory and trauma. I also discovered the power of accidental interpretations from AI — moments that initially seemed awkward often enhanced the emotional depth of the story.
