Inspiration

The Ghost of Creation was born from exhaustion—exhaustion of images, of endless scrolling, of the saturation of the visible. I was inspired by the collapse of digital attention and the feeling that meaning itself is becoming impossible in contemporary visual culture.

I wanted to create a work that does not explain, teach, or comfort, but interrupts, sabotages, and questions the viewer's relationship with the digital spectacle. The glitch is not decoration; it is a symptom, a political act, a reflection of the fragility of communication today.

What it does

Through this project, I explored the unstable boundaries between real and synthetic, human and machine. Generative AI allowed me to reprocess footage from multiple cities—New York, Paris, Madrid, Zagreb, Milan, Palermo, and Sardinia—creating landscapes that feel both familiar and alien.

I learned how error and failure, traditionally seen as flaws, can become the language of the artwork itself, turning interruption into expression, and breakdown into meaning.

How we built it

The project was realized using generative AI platforms (Runway ML, custom AI pipelines) to process and distort video footage. Sound design and voice-over were composed to reinforce the feeling of disruption, fatigue, and interrogation.

The final piece merges:

  • Original footage (documentary-style shots)
  • AI-generated reprocessing
  • Glitch manipulations (digital artifacts, frame shifts, visual errors)

Voice-over monologue with ElevenLabs (text written as a direct, urgent address to a collective audience)

Challenges we ran into

  • Maintaining a coherent narrative while embracing instability and failure.
  • Balancing glitch as message versus glitch as visual style.
  • Making a piece that is to be endured, not understood, while keeping the audience engaged.

Technical challenges in synchronizing AI-processed visuals with sound without losing the sense of chaos.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully merged real and AI-generated footage from multiple cities into a coherent, disturbing audiovisual landscape.
  • Created a voice-over monologue that interrupts and interrogates, rather than explains, embodying the failure of communication in contemporary digital life.
  • Transformed glitch and error into the central language of the artwork, making each interruption and artifact a deliberate act.
  • Produced a piece that is to be endured, not understood, challenging viewers’ perception of art, technology, and meaning.

What we learned

  • How to use failure and glitch as expressive tools, rather than flaws.
  • Techniques for integrating AI-generated imagery with live footage while preserving emotional and conceptual impact.
  • The delicate balance between disruption and coherence: making a chaotic work still engaging and intelligible enough to provoke thought.
  • The power of voice and monologue to guide the viewer through an unstable, post-digital audiovisual environment.

What's next for THE GHOST OF CREATION

  • Further exploration of AI and generative processes to push boundaries of audiovisual experimentation.
  • Development of interactive or live extensions, where viewers become part of the machine that watches the watcher.
  • Expansion into multi-sensory experiences combining sound, video, and glitch in immersive formats.
  • Continued reflection on art, failure, and digital overload, building a dialogue between human perception and technological mediation.
