Inspiration
We were selected by Fairground.TV to create an episode for their Mob Boss True Crime series. We wanted to tell a lesser-known story and found Mishka Yaponchik: a pickpocket who rose to become a folk hero and mob legend in early 1900s Odessa. His charm, rapid rise, and tragic fall gave us a strong emotional base for a character-driven crime drama.
What it does
It tells a reflective crime story about a young thief whose charisma turns him into a local legend. The film follows his growing influence in Odessa, the tension between his public image and criminal actions, and how the same city that once adored him eventually turns against him.
How we built it
We wrote the script with ChatGPT, designed the world and characters with Midjourney, and animated the story using LumaLabs, BasedLads, and Midjourney. Lipsync was done with Hedra, voiceover created in ElevenLabs, and the soundtrack composed in Suno.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was having a large story with a lot to show and very limited time. We needed to make Mishka’s life easy to follow, show how his choices shaped his rise and downfall, and keep the narrative clear while working under tight production deadlines.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a compact, emotional portrait of a complex figure and managed to bring a lesser-known historical character to life with a clear visual identity and strong pacing.
What we learned
We learned how to blend crime drama with historical texture, how to direct a character-focused story with AI tools, and how to build mood and atmosphere without losing clarity.
What's next for The Gentleman of Odessa
We won’t continue Mishka’s story, it stands as a complete short within the Fairground.TV programming.
