Inspiration

We were inspired by online learners and students working from home who didn't get the college experience they were hoping for. Typically, UF students complete this bucket list called "The F Book" where they go to best sites and learn about UF traditions. Now, with many students moving back on campus or still wanting to learn about college-life, we wanted to help them adapt to this experience while keeping safe from COVID-19.

What it does

The Gat-AR tour exposes students to college life by using echoAR technology to display holograms as students visit popular sites on campus. Students can read fun facts about the campus, interesting stories, and history as they walk around and scan the campus to find the holograms.

Students can also participate in the online tour by using our website and scanning images for the holograms to pop up on their web devices. That way, people can participate in-person and at home.

How I built it

We used HTML to code our website and added a user-friendly web design. Using an HTML/CSS template, we customized our website to match the University of Florida theme. We researched the most popular spots to add to our tour. Furthermore, we added graphics with fun facts and interesting stories to transform them into holograms on echoAR that would pop up on their web devices or at the location sites we organized for the tour.

Challenges I ran into

We had some errors and challenges while writing our website code and working with echoAR. Nonetheless, we found communication and collaboration the best way for us to solve these problems and we were able to push through.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of how much we learned about web development, AR/VR, UX, and video editting. We had so much fun participating in this hackathon and feel like we beat our own "personal records" for learning. We haven't had much hands-on experience like this until now, especially as first-time hackers.

What I learned

We learned that coding can solve real-world problems and help people from all parts of the world. We learned that AR/VR can help students connect with each other at a closer level and create distinct, innovative solutions by using visuals. Lastly, we learned that teamwork can accelerate a project and make the experience even better.

What's next for The Gat-AR Tour

We hope to learn more about AR by animating buildings and landmarks on the campus to come to life. Students could then visualize the campus even better from the comfort of their homes. We also want to implement a social distancing marker that would help users visualize how far 6 feet apart really is! That way, students can ensure responsible social distancing practices while embarking on their journey to learn more about their university.
