Inspiration
Our website has many, many sources of inspiration. A huge part about creating and innovating is looking at others and saying, “woah, I like that” or “hmm, maybe I could fix that”. Inspiration, for us, came in the form of our environment and seeing people work. This hackathon experience allowed us to meet people and share ideas with each other, and that inspired our website to be better than we planned it to.
What it does
Urban sustainability is a HUGE environmental issue which big areas like Manhattan (as shown in our website) struggle with. However, they’re not the first nor the last urban hotspot to implement policies to combat the unsustainable methods and policies set in place from previous centuries. Our website serves as an informative read, providing images and examples and drawings from Manhattan’s city layout, to policies previously implemented, to what they can do today to make the world a more sustainable place: both for us humans and the wildlife surrounding us. We hope our website can reach people and help them understand how dire a problem this is; not just for us, but for the thousands of animals constantly losing their homes to urbanization and the rapidly changing environment.
How we built it
We built our website with mainly JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. We used a collaborator-friendly platform called CodeHS and VSCode to run and make changes to our website’s code. We used Google Docs to help brainstorm ideas and design. For us, building the website was a fun and memorable experience, and we had fun tinkering and trying different ways to style and design our website.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a multitude of challenges while building this website. For example, we didn’t understand what we were doing at first. As we started to develop ideas, our final image started to become clearer and we decided to pursue that. For us, brainstorming ideas
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
This hackathon was a valuable learning experience for all of us: we learned about teamwork while simultaneously solving problems with effective design. We further developed our JS, HTML, and CSS knowledge while applying principles of art and design to improve the user interface of our website. We learned a lot about color theory and creating impact on certain areas of the website. We learned how to do some pretty cool stuff with HTML and learned to make our website to change and animate. On top of all the technical skills we developed throughout this process, we learned soft skills that could be valuable in any career we decide to pursue. We learned how to work with each other and come to quick decisions that can either positively or negatively impact our whole project. We learned how to effectively communicate with each other, to get things done quickly while we’re not together. We learned how to manage our time to get the website finished on time. We learned how to communicate with leadership, to make things more efficient and effective, and overall, this was a valuable learning experience.
What's next for The Future of Sustainability
We hope to persuade those impacted by The Future of Sustainability to take steps towards a more eco-friendly and sustainable environment. This could involve recycling and helping animals in need. The future of sustainability is in our hands, after all.
