Taking inspiration from game jams and symbolic entertainment, we decided to focus on the concept of deforestation utilizing the clicker genre.
In The Forest, you're a lumberer simply cutting down trees and upgrading themselves with efficiency buttons placed around our plains biome. Replanting is our major takeaway, as far too trees are replanted for the amount that are removed daily. As a final goal, quitting the game costs an approximate estimation of clickers thats similar to the amount of trees uprooted in deforestation attempts—a shocking reminder of environmental malpractice. For players, we intend to provide a slice-of-life retrospection that soothes with simplistic gameplay yet remains clear in its disastrous symbolism.
We built this game demo using Godot, of which 2 out of our 3 members had no prior experience with.
Our greatest challenge was learning how to develop with Godot's proprietary language. With no ability to effectively apply our intended features into our game, we experience many periods of inactivity without progress—most spent learning new tools to try and better our Godot ability.
We're proud of our final product, particularly with our personally made sprites and images. The game experience many changes due to our own technical difficulties, yet we created a final product thats easily expandable with more scenes, upgrades, and far more then what we had finished with.
