Inspiration
Our inspiration was the millions of people that face food insecurity and how prevalent this issue is in the world, especially the US. We wanted to bring more attention to this issue through both our website and our app, because we believe that knowledge is power and a key step to solving this issue.
What it does
This website creates a simulation-like experience for the user, as they are taken through, via the app, an experience of what it is like to be a low-income worker in a high economy. The user is presented with various scenarios, from rent, going grocery shopping, and examples of emergent expenses (such as going to the doctor). At the end of the game, the user realizes they do not have enough money to live on, getting into the shoes of a low-income worker.
How we built it
We built the app in Java, and used CSS and HTML to stylize it, and we built the website using HTML, Javascript and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into was having to change the functionality of our app and come up with new ideas multiple times, due to our original ideas not being able to be translated into code in the time that we had. We also ran into a math issue while subtracting expenses from income on the app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are super proud of getting our app to work, which was the biggest challenge of all.
What we learned
We learned that we had the ability to create an app and a website within 24 hours, which we did not believe that we would be able to do initially, especially being first-years with little code experience.
What's next for The Food Insecurity Initiative
We hope to implement more scenarios in our app, and add more sections to our website.
