Inspiration

There is a rhythm to our day. Five times, a call to pause, reflect, and connect. Yet, in the noise of modern life, that rhythm can be lost. A prayer can feel like another task on a long to-do list. Existing apps often add to the noise with loud alerts and cluttered interfaces.

We asked a simple question: What if a tool could do the opposite? What if it could help create a quiet space for devotion, instead of just reminding you of a duty? That question was the inspiration for The Five.

What it does

The Five is a prayer tracker designed to help you reconnect with your daily prayers, not just check them off. It transforms a duty back into a devotion.

It doesn't just show you data; it lets you see your commitment take shape through simple, elegant visuals. It celebrates your consistency with quiet affirmations, not distracting badges. And when a prayer is missed, it offers a gentle, guilt-free way to log it and get back on track. It is a tool that respects your focus and your intention.

How we built it

Our development philosophy was guided by our principle of simplicity, and our technology choices reflect that.

For the user interface, we chose React. Its component-based architecture allowed us to construct the experience from simple, isolated, and reusable pieces. This approach ensures every part of the app is built with focus and can be maintained with clarity.

We wrote our code in TypeScript. This wasn't just about preventing errors; it was about building with confidence. A well-defined structure provides a reliable foundation, allowing us to craft a more robust and predictable experience for the user.

The entire development environment was powered by Vite. Its incredible speed allowed us to iterate almost instantly, turning ideas into reality without friction. A fluid workflow is essential to maintaining creative momentum and refining the smallest details.

Node.js and NPM served as the backbone of our project, giving us access to a vast and robust ecosystem that makes modern, efficient development possible.

Design Process: Prompt-Based Design

Our design process was unconventional. Instead of beginning with visual mockups, we began with a dialogue in Bolt.new platform.

We adopted a prompt-based design workflow, where our core concepts were forged and refined through a conversation with a generative AI. Every aspect—from the app's name and brand voice to the very text you are reading now—was developed by articulating a clear intention and asking the right questions.

This method allowed us to prototype with words first, ensuring the 'why' behind the product was crystal clear before a single line of code was written. This conceptual blueprint then directly informed our minimalist UI, ensuring the final product is a true and simple reflection of its purpose.

Challenges we ran into

Our greatest challenge was a philosophical one: resisting the temptation to add more. In a world where apps compete on feature count, our challenge was to remain true to our vision of simplicity. Every potential feature—more stats, social sharing, complex customizations—was weighed against our core mission. Learning to say "no" was the hardest and most important part of our development process.

On a technical level, ensuring the prayer time calculations were precise for every user, everywhere, required meticulous testing. We believe precision is a form of respect for the user's devotion.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of creating an experience that feels the way we intended: quiet, respectful, and focused. The single tap to log a prayer is a moment of small satisfaction, not a chore, and we spent hours refining that one interaction until it felt right.

Ultimately, our biggest accomplishment is building a tool that we, ourselves, now use every day. It has brought a sense of mindful intention back into our own daily rhythm, and that is the truest measure of its success.

What we learned

Simplicity is profoundly complex. To create something that feels simple requires a ruthless commitment to eliminating the non-essential.

The most important feature can be a feeling. The sense of calm and focus the app provides is more valuable than any single function.

A great tool gets out of the way. It should empower the user to do what they set out to do, then gracefully disappear into the background.

What's next for The Five: Muslim Prayer Tracker

Our roadmap is not about adding clutter, but about deepening the core experience. We are exploring:

More thoughtful insights: Gentle, data-driven reflections on your patterns to help you grow.

Shared Commitment: A private way to share your progress with a spouse or a close family member, fostering mutual encouragement.

Wearable Integration: Bringing the same quiet, minimal experience to your wrist.

Our mission remains the same: to build a quiet space for devotion in a noisy world.
