Inspiration
My name is Mirrah Conner a college student who loves cooking and healthy eating, I wanted to create a platform that helps people discover organic meal recipes easily. I noticed how challenging it can be to find healthy recipes online, especially when you want to explore different cuisines. This motivated me to build an app that simplifies that process and offers a seamless user experience.
What it does
My web application, OrgChoices, allows users to search for organic meal recipes through a simple and interactive search bar. By entering a meal name, users can access a variety of healthy recipes, complete with ingredients, instructions, and images. The app pulls data from the MealDB API, providing a rich collection of recipes from around the world.
How we built it
I built this app using Node.js and Express for the backend, where I set up a server to handle API requests. The frontend is crafted with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, making it user-friendly and visually appealing. I utilized Bootstrap for styling and Axios to manage API calls from the frontend to the backend, ensuring smooth data retrieval. The project structure includes server.js for the server logic, package.json for dependencies, and scripts.js for handling user interactions on the web page.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to properly connect the frontend to the backend. Initially, I struggled with making the API requests and ensuring the data was formatted correctly. There were also some hiccups with CORS issues, but after researching and implementing the necessary middleware, I was able to resolve those problems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I’m really proud that I was able to create a functional web application from scratch. Learning how to fetch data from an API and dynamically display it on a webpage was a huge milestone for me. Seeing the search feature work successfully gave me a sense of accomplishment that I didn’t expect as a beginner.
What we learned
Throughout this project, I learned a lot about full-stack development, particularly how to integrate an API into my application. I also gained a deeper understanding of JavaScript and how to manage asynchronous operations. This project taught me the importance of debugging and finding solutions to unexpected problems, which will definitely help me in my future projects.
What's next for THe First Developer
Moving forward, I plan to enhance OrgChoices by adding more features, such as user accounts, allowing users to save their favorite recipes. I also want to improve the UI for a more polished look and feel. Additionally, I am interested in exploring how to implement a rating system for recipes, so users can provide feedback on their experiences. This project has sparked my passion for web development, and I can’t wait to continue building and learning!
