Inspiration

We wanted to create an application that improves the health outcomes for patients by helping them manage their medications adherence while also providing useful data to the doctor and healthcare providers so that the patients health can be improved through more communication between these three parties.

What it does

The Fifth Element is an application that models a phone application that can take data from a smart watch's heart rate monitor then can report this to health care provider so informed decisions can be made to advance the quality of care the patient receives. The application also monitors if a medication would leave them vulnerable to changes in heart rate and can then send this data to their doctor and provider. Finally the application helps the patient keep track of any medications they are on and sends reminders to take them. Data is collected on how often doses are skipped on a per medication basis and if a dose is skipped enough in a day it notes that a dose was skipped entirely for that day.

How we built it

We used Java to create the application from scratch to model how the application would function on an Android or iOS device and how it would receive data from a smart watch device.

Challenges we ran into

We originally wanted to create the actual application via Android or iOS, however we did not have the necessary equipment for testing in an iOS environment and coding due to the smart watch we had using iOS.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finding a way to implement emerging technologies in a manner that helps increase positive health outcomes for patients while allowing providers to aid in creating better programs for the patient.

What we learned

How to create an application framework that can send and receive data by bridging technologies and multiple parties.

What's next for The Fifth Element

If we were to continue the project the next goal would be to create a functional prototype in the iOS environment so that the usability of the model could be tested in actuality.
