Inspiration
Grief is universal, yet the ways we remember our loved ones often feel impersonal or stuck in the past. We wanted to create something tactile, warm, and modern—a way to keep someone close without trying to replace them. Inspired by how physical objects like heirlooms or letters can spark emotional memory, eterna was born: a haptic object that bridges the digital and emotional realms.
What it does
eterna is a physical, customizable memory vessel. It stores and shares curated memories of a deceased loved one—voice messages, photos, stories—accessible via gentle touch. It becomes part of daily life, offering comfort without feeling artificial or intrusive. There are no holograms or AI imitations—just authentic, human memories in a meaningful form.
How we built it
We combined a microcontroller with a capacitive touch sensor, speaker module, and storage unit to create the physical prototype. On the software side, we used a simple web-based interface (React + Firebase) for uploading and managing digital memories. The hardware and software sync seamlessly via Bluetooth, making interaction intuitive and personal.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing emotional sensitivity with technological innovation
- Designing hardware that’s both functional and comforting to touch
- Avoiding "digital resurrection" features while still making the memories feel alive
- Ensuring memory expansion without overcomplicating user experience
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a functioning haptic memory object
- Created a user-friendly interface to upload and access memories
- Developed a respectful, emotionally resonant design that avoids clichés
- Made something that sparked emotional responses in early testers
What we learned
- Mourning is deeply individual, but tools for grief can be both universal and intimate
- Simplicity in design often leads to more emotional impact
- Tactile interaction can be a powerful emotional trigger when paired with memory 4.Building tech for grief requires empathy, not just innovation
What's next for The Eterna
We plan to develop modular memory slots so users can expand eterna as more loved ones pass on. We'd also like to add support for encrypted cloud backups, voice narration tagging, and more form factor options to suit different mourning styles.
