About the Project

Young children experience intense emotions but often struggle to recognize, express, and regulate them. Inspired by research on early childhood emotional development, we created The Emotional Plant, an interactive tool that transforms emotions into a visual and tangible experience. By integrating real-time emotion tracking, dynamic visual feedback, and caregiver-assisted learning, this project helps children aged 3–7 develop emotional awareness in an intuitive and engaging way.

What Inspired Us

The inspiration for this project came from observing how young children often lack the tools to express their feelings, leading to frustration, anxiety, or withdrawal. While many emotional learning tools exist for older children and adults, we found a gap in resources tailored to early childhood emotional development. We wanted to create something that was not just an educational tool but an interactive, engaging experience that helps kids build emotional intelligence naturally.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we explored key psychological research on childhood emotion regulation and learned about the importance of multi-sensory learning. We also discovered that children engage more effectively with tangible, interactive objects rather than passive screen-based learning. Additionally, we gained valuable insights into how caregivers and teachers can play a crucial role in guiding children through their emotional development.

Future Plans

We plan to expand this project by enhancing sensory feedback mechanisms (e.g., sound and haptic responses) and integrating with educational platforms to provide real-time emotional insights for caregivers and teachers.
