Inspiration

We were fascinated by the dataset provided. Chinese state media, globally influential yet still mysterious for many, offers an excellent opportunity to glean insights on how such a major world player harnesses its digital presence to extend its influence.

What it does

"The Dragon's Media Matrix: China's Digital Presence" is an in-depth dashboard designed to demystify the digital landscape of Chinese state media. It serves as a bridge between raw, unprocessed data and discernable, actionable insights, offering a lens into matters of public interest and global significance.

This dashboard is composed of a variety of visualizations that comprehensively cover the digital footprint of Chinese state media, across different social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. From charts that track follower numbers, the dashboard paints a picture both broad and detailed.

One unique aspect of the dashboard is that it encapsulates not just the sheer numbers, but also the nuanced variables behind them. It provides users the flexibility to dissect data based on a region of focus, enabling them to explore China's media influence in specific geographical contexts, from the Americas to Africa.

Language selection is another powerful filter that this dashboard offers, allowing users to understand how language plays a role in the state media's outreach. From Mandarin to English or Spanish, users can gauge the impact and penetration of state media in various linguistic communities.

Additionally, the dashboard lets users delve into specific entities and their parent organizations which play a critical role in shaping the state media's presence. This provides deeper insight into the organizational labyrinth powering the vast digital presence of Chinese state media.

Overall, "The Dragon's Media Matrix" is a reliable, insightful navigator guiding users through the intricate networks of China's digital state media world, offering multiple layers of tailored insights. The choice to manipulate significant variables enables users to customize the dashboard to their areas of interest and curiosity, making it a potent tool for research and awareness.

How we built it

Our solution began with conceptualizing the design aimed towards enhancing the user experience. Keeping the complexities and the vastness of the dataset in mind, we decided to leverage the robust features of Apex Charts. This helped us to deliver an array of intuitive and dynamic visualizations, majorly including world maps, pie charts, bar graphs, and information cards. Apex Charts played an instrumental role in turning raw data into a visually appealing and understandable format.

For the backend, we used PHP, one of the most popular and powerful scripting languages, especially suited for web development. PHP proved to be essential for server-side data processing tasks, including extracting, cleaning, and formatting the data.

To manage and store this large and complex dataset, we used MySQL. As a relational database system, MySQL provided an efficient and reliable solution. We employed a range of SQL queries to filter, sort and retrieve data as per the user interaction on the dashboard.

We recognized early on that seamless user interactions were paramount to our dashboard's success. JavaScript's versatility and functionality made it the perfect choice for this. From handling user input to dynamically updating the visualizations, JavaScript was used to provide an interactive and seamless exploration experience.

Overall, the combined synergy of Apex Charts, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript, each playing its integral role, helped us build a robust, insightful, and user-friendly dashboard that not only provides essential data insights but also enhances user engagement.

Challenges we ran into

Cleaning the dataset was a challenging process, given its comprehensive span. Constructing visualizations that were both informative and visually appealing required creative thinking. Integrating different technologies into a smooth, functioning platform presented its own learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of our noteworthy accomplishments is the development of the versatile and insightful Social Media Pie Chart. It succinctly captures the presence and impact of all the different social media platforms used by the Chinese state media. The dynamic nature of the pie chart provides an expansive yet consolidated view at the same time, enabling a comprehensive comparative analysis.

Additionally, we successfully created a user-friendly Information Card Layout, which succinctly encapsulates critical data points like most followed platform, the largest follower base region, and other impactful details about each media entity. This layout allows a quick and targeted data scan, thereby increasing user accessibility and engagement.

To keep our observational landscape updated and insightful, we integrated Google News Trends into our dashboard. This exciting feature allows users to see the latest trending topics related to Chinese state media, therefore keeping them abreast with the ongoing discussions and narrative.

These features are a testament to our innovative blending of data science and aesthetics to provide a highly functional and intuitive user experience. They form the foundation of our unique accomplishments in this project, of which we are immensely proud.

What we learned

We gained extensive knowledge on how to cleanse, process, and integrate large datasets into a coherent and engaging user interface. More than that, we learned about the fascinating landscape of China's digital media presence and its global impacts.

What's next for The Dragon's Media Matrix: China's Digital Presence

We plan to regularly update the dashboard to reflect real-time changes. Additional features like predictive analytics to foresee possible future trends in Chinese media influence would add more depth. Further, we would love to expand our datasets to include other major players to create a comparative global media matrix.
