Inspiration
Dollar Tracker was inspired by the need for a simple and efficient way to track employee work hours and earnings without relying on complex or expensive payroll systems. I wanted to build a lightweight desktop solution that focuses on accuracy, usability, and structured data management.
What it does
Dollar Tracker is a desktop application that allows:
- Employees to clock in and clock out
- Managers to create and manage schedules
- Tracking of worked hours and calculated earnings
- Storage of employee and schedule data in a structured format
- Easy access to work history and shift information
The system simulates a real-world payroll and time tracking environment with a focus on reliability and simplicity.
How I built it
The application was built using:
- C++ for core logic and system functionality
- Qt framework for the graphical user interface
- Object-Oriented Programming principles for system design
- File-based storage to manage employees, schedules, and time logs
I structured the application into modular components to handle user interaction, data processing, and persistent storage.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges was managing file-based data storage while ensuring consistency and preventing data corruption. Designing a system that accurately tracks time and calculates earnings also required careful handling of edge cases.
Building a responsive and user-friendly GUI using Qt while integrating backend logic was another key challenge.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Built a fully functional desktop application using C++ and Qt
- Implemented time tracking and payroll logic from scratch
- Designed a structured system for managing employees and schedules
- Created a clean and interactive graphical interface
What I learned
This project strengthened my understanding of:
- Object-Oriented Programming and system design
- Desktop application development with Qt
- File handling and persistent data storage
- Building user interfaces connected to backend logic
What's next
Future improvements include:
- Migrating from file-based storage to a database system
- Adding authentication and user roles
- Exporting reports and payroll summaries
- Enhancing UI/UX for a more modern interface
- Potential integration with cloud storage
