Inspiration
Our project, The Decisive Moment: Spiders in the Sky, was inspired by Operation Spiderweb, an unprecedented real-world drone mission carried out by Ukraine. Less than four weeks after the event took place, we set out to create a five-minute short film that brings to life what has been described as “the most incredible drone operation ever.” The ambition was to dramatize a highly complex and covert event with the speed, emotional intensity, and cinematic style of a “Mission: Impossible for the news.”
What We Learned and Aimed to Achieve
This project served as a proof of concept for how quickly and powerfully AI can support nonfiction storytelling. Our goal was to see whether a small creative team could turn breaking geopolitical events into a cinematic narrative in near real time. It became an exploration of how emerging AI tools could help us craft something that looks and feels like a high-budget documentary, but produced at unprecedented speed.
How We Built It
“Spiders in the Sky” was created using a combination of Veo3, OpenAI’s Sora, and MidJourney. We generated 99% of the graphics with AI, using replicated images released by Ukraine, publicly available details about the Russian bases involved in the operation, and the AI models’ advanced prompt and search capabilities. The entire process, from concept to completion, took roughly one week, with OneDay fully funding the production.
Challenges We Faced
Building a film around an ongoing, sensitive geopolitical event required balancing factual grounding with cinematic interpretation. Although we adhered closely to reported details of Operation Spiderweb, we also embraced creative, fictional, and sometimes humorous moments, a blend that demanded careful judgment. Another significant challenge was the speed: crafting a polished, emotionally resonant short film in under a week required both technical efficiency and tight creative alignment.
