Inspiration

Our personal experiences of going to the market and not being able to find what we're looking for.

What it does

Primary functionality is to keep track of items in stock at the market, filtered by type. Example categories include sweet snacks, international foods, and smoothies. We also highlight foods that are expiring soon to eliminate food waste at the markets.

How we built it

While some of our team had experience with HTML/CSS and Javascript, none of us had used these languages to create something of this scale. It was a fulfilling challenge to learn how to use HTML in conjunction with styling and animation elements to create a final functional project.

Challenges we ran into

Like mentioned before, not all of our team members had experience with building websites from scratch and the ones that did had never done something of this scale. Figuring out how to link all the pages properly was one of our primary challenges, because we wanted to maintain some elements while slightly altering others. Though this remains unresolved, we also spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how to connect .csv files so that they would update automatically on the website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges we faced, we're really happy with our final project! We were able to adapt to the issues we encountered and readjust our timeline and goals accordingly. We all became more familiar with the languages used and learned how to edit premade templates to fit our purposes. Additionally, this was the first time our team had worked together on any sort of project, and we were able to collaborate well when it came to splitting up the work and sharing code.

What we learned

As mentioned earlier, we all became more familiar with the languages and how they all could be combined to work together. Most of the projects we'd done before used just a single language, but juggling multiple languages and files was a new experience for all of us.

What's next for The Davis Stocked Market

We want to work on improving the UX for both market employees and market customers. For example, we want to add a feature allowing employees to login to edit a spreadsheet of inventory, and edits to be automatically updated on the website. We also want to add filters and sorting functionalities so that students can sort food alphabetically or by nutrition information.
