Inspiration: This game is largely inspired by various wave-based survival games and arcade style games. With a nod to retro games with the art style and simple mechanics.
What it does: It challenges players to discover all there is to see in the world while surviving as long as possible. The loop has the player gradually increasing their potency through experience, upgrades, and various flashlights which offer improvements over the base flashlight or new ways to play (like the light orb projectile flashlight).
How I built it: I used maya, horizon desktop editor and typescript with the help of Creator Assistant.
Challenges we ran into: This was the first complete world I have built and published in Horizon. I was previously familiar with Unity so most of my trouble came from learning the new way of doing things. Early on the choices I was making made me hit the world caps quickly.
Accomplishments & What I learned: I set out to create a very dynamic world with features I wasn’t sure were possible. I built out a pooling system that took iteration. I reached a point where I can have my world populate on the fly and it could extend much further than it currently does. The tools are now there to allow the world to grow in many ways.
What's next for The Darkest Void: I’ll be balancing difficulty early on. I intend to have the world evolve to reveal new mysteries and offer users a reason to keep exploring the same space. I want to build sub-levels that users can work together to reach but toggling a set of switches in the world. This way even if players get good enough to find all 4 safehouses in one run, there will be another level to explore.
