Inspiration

Our transition through middle school and into high school was faced with many daily challenges and struggles. As students like us age, we take on more and more responsibilities, including school, extracurriculars, and out-of-control circumstances such as family issues. It can be difficult to manage both physical and mental health in these strange and confusing stages of our life. So, we want to create a fun and interactive game that will allow kids to learn about time and health management skills as they continue on their journey to adulthood.

What it does

Our game allows a player to move around a character, throughout his daily life. He can move between different parts of his home as he completes day-to-day tasks such as eating food, brushing their teeth, and going to school. Each task impacts the character's happiness on a scale of 1 to 100. But players should be wary of devious tasks! There are tasks that offer a quick, temporary mental boost such as playing games in class - but will lead to more significant mental issues later in the day as the character does not know the material for his next test (for which he may ask help, which takes more time out of more enjoyable tasks). In this way, kids learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle via trial-and-error, understanding how different tasks can impact their physical and mental health in different ways as well as plan ahead to sustain more long-term health.

How we built it

We used a software known as "Snap", a block coding website that allows you to create simple games using assets and scenes.

Challenges we ran into

Assets interact with other elements almost immediately, so when an incorrectly sized image is put into the game, it interacts with every neighboring asset, breaking the game.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We drew all of the art for our project by hand, truly adding to the vintage aesthetic of the game.

What we learned

We learned how to use block-coding software such as snap. We also learned important aspects of game design, such as button management and character movement.

What's next for The Daily Routine

Our goal for The Daily Routine is to eventually move it out of Snap. Right now, this version is serving as sort of storyboard and overall visualization of our idea for what we hope will eventually become a better version of the game. Snap has a lot of limitations, and as a team, it's pretty much the extent of our capabilities right now. In the future, we would like to move the game into an engine such as Unity, where we would be able to increase the features and functionality in order to better engage an audience, and overall make it more visually appealing.
