Inspiration
Mimic Daily was inspired by one question:
Can people still recognize a human voice when AI is getting better every day?
I wanted to build a project that makes AI literacy feel like a game instead of a lesson. As AI-generated writing becomes more common, I think it is important for people to practice recognizing what feels human, what feels artificial, and what feels like a mix of both.
Instead of making AI just a tool in the background, I wanted AI to become the opponent. Players learn from the AI, the AI learns from the players, and the community slowly gets better at spotting the difference.
What it does
Mimic Daily is an AI-powered social deduction game where players write today, investigate tomorrow, and guess which anonymous responses were Human, AI, or Hybrid.
Each day, players answer a creative prompt. The next day, those answers are mixed with AI-generated and Hybrid responses. Players investigate the anonymous submissions, vote on what they think each one is, and then see the reveal.
After voting, players can:
- See the correct answers
- Earn XP
- Build daily streaks
- Unlock achievements
- Track their history
- Climb the leaderboard
The core loop is simple:
Answer today -> Investigate tomorrow -> Reveal results -> Earn XP -> Come back again
The goal is to make players better at understanding AI-generated writing through daily practice, community reasoning, and pattern recognition.
How I built it
I built Mimic Daily using:
- Devvit Web
- React
- TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- Hono
- Redis-backed Devvit storage
- Google Gemini
The frontend was built as a responsive web experience using React and Tailwind CSS. The backend uses Devvit Web server endpoints with Hono, while Redis-backed Devvit storage handles persistent game data like prompts, answers, votes, XP, streaks, achievements, player history, and leaderboard stats.
Gemini helps power several parts of the experience:
- Generating AI answers
- Moderating player submissions
- Reviewing player reasoning
- Creating future prompts
- Evolving the AI’s behavior based on community feedback
The AI evolution system stores what players notice about AI-generated answers, then uses that feedback to make future AI responses harder to identify. The goal was not to fine-tune a model, but to create the feeling of an opponent that adapts as the community improves.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge was making a true daily game easy to demo. Since the game depends on time passing, I added a simulate day tool to test the full loop quickly without waiting until the next real day.
Another challenge was making AI feel like part of the game, not the whole game. I did not want the project to feel like a basic AI wrapper. The community is the real hook: players write, vote, explain their reasoning, compare guesses, and slowly train the game’s evolving opponent.
I also had to balance simplicity and depth. The game needed to be understandable in a few seconds, but still have enough progression and surprise to make players want to return.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
I am proud that Mimic Daily has a complete playable loop, including:
- Daily prompts
- Human vs AI investigations
- Hybrid answers
- XP and leveling
- Streaks
- Achievements
- Player history
- Leaderboards
- Dark mode
- Mobile navigation
- A guided tour
- A simulate day tool for testing and demos
I am especially proud of how the game turns AI literacy into a social experience. The fun is not only guessing correctly, but also seeing how other players thought, what fooled the community, and what gave the AI away.
What I learned
I learned that AI projects are more interesting when people are part of the loop. Instead of only using AI to generate content, I used the community’s guesses and explanations to shape how the AI behaves over time.
I also learned that a good game needs to be simple to understand but deep enough to make people come back. A streak system helps, but the stronger hook is curiosity:
What did people write yesterday, and can I still spot the machine?
Most importantly, I learned that AI literacy does not have to feel boring or technical. It can be interactive, competitive, and social.
What’s next for Mimic Daily
Next, I want to add:
- Community-specific prompt packs
- Weekly seasons
- Richer result breakdowns
- Post-reveal discussion features
- More advanced AI evolution
- Better moderator controls
- Expanded achievement paths
- More ways for players to explain their reasoning
The goal is to make Mimic Daily a repeatable AI literacy challenge:
Write today.
Investigate tomorrow.
See if the community can still spot the machine.
