Inspiration

The primary inspiration was a close personal experience: a friend's silent struggle with depression. This revealed the prevalence of the "crystal masks" we build under social pressure to project success and avoid judgment, while hiding anxiety and loneliness. The project was born from the urgent need to transform this life lesson into a call for prevention and empathy, promoting the simple act of asking: "How are you, really?"

What it does

"The Crystal Mask" is a socially conscious experimental / open music video (salsa mainly) that serves as an awareness tool.

Emotional Impact: It uses an intense lyrical narrative and powerful musical contrast to reflect the internal anguish hidden behind social facades.

Prevention Message: Its main function is to dismantle the stigma of mental health, encouraging the audience to ask for help and to reach out (empathy) as an act of prevention against loneliness and depression.

How we built it

The project was built by merging artistic creativity with artificial intelligence technology, all while balancing professional and family life:

Script and Lyrics: The lyrical narrative was structured into three acts (Mask, Crisis, Revelation) based on the lessons learned from depression and the need for connection.

Music Production (SUNO): I used AI tools (SUNO) to quickly musicalize my ideas and emotions, creating the necessary hip-hop soundtrack to reflect the shifts in emotional tone (from aggression to hope).

Video Generation (Gemini and Veo): Visual concepts were generated and refined using Gemini and Veo, based on my initial drawings, bringing the metaphor of the mask and urban solitude to life.

Final Editing (ClipChamp): The music video was consolidated with the music and visuals using ClipChamp for final editing and post-production.

Challenges we ran into

Time Balance (Engineer vs. Artist): The biggest challenge was managing time between my role as a software engineer, intensive music creation, and dedication to my family. This required optimizing creative processes and prioritizing efficiency.

Sensitive Tone: Maintaining the authenticity and seriousness of the depression theme, ensuring that the message of hope was genuine and not melodramatic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successful Tech Integration: Successfully musicalizing and producing a quality music video using a blend of AI (SUNO, Gemini, Veo) with traditional editing tools, demonstrating an innovative workflow.

Family Mentorship: Being able to share the creation process with my children, turning the project into a family lesson on resilience, creativity, and the positive use of technology.

Creating a Helpful Message: Transforming a painful personal experience into an artistic piece with a clear purpose of mental health awareness and support.

What we learned

I learned that vulnerability is a source of power and artistic connection. Additionally:

Depression Patterns: I gained a deeper understanding of the emotional and behavioral patterns of depression.

Creative Efficiency: AI taught me a new level of efficiency, allowing me to materialize complex video and music concepts in a fraction of the traditional time.

The Value of the Question: The most important lesson remains the same: the intervention of empathy (the question "How are you, really?") is the most courageous and crucial act of prevention.

What's next for The Crystal Mask

Launch and Awareness Campaign: Promote the music video on social media with a focus on depression prevention, partnering with mental health organizations.

Format Expansion: Explore creating a series of short documentaries or testimonials based on the song's message, highlighting stories of people who decided to drop the mask.

Integration into Educational Platforms: Seek opportunities to use the song and video in workshops or school programs as a discussion tool for empathy and emotional health.

I'm based in Peru. I have published this version in spanish, and I want to promote this song in differents spaces dedictated to work with patients with depression.
