Inspiration

The Cricket and the Bard was inspired by the emotional struggles every artist faces—doubt, failure, and the unexpected return of inspiration. I wanted to capture an intimate moment when a musician, feeling defeated, finds renewal from the most unlikely source. Originally written as a poem for my Stout Tales fantasy series, I saw the potential to bring it to life through AI-assisted animation and music.

What it does

This short animated music video tells a complete emotional story using only narration, music, and visuals—no dialogue or complex action. It invites viewers into a magical forest, where a disheartened bard encounters a cricket that not only echoes his song but surpasses it. Through their musical "duel," the bard rediscovers his purpose and passion.

How we built it

While creating an AI-narrated version of my book ALE – The Terrible Tudors using ElevenLabs, I decided to transform one of my bard songs into a music video.

  • Music was composed with Suno, matching the poem’s emotional arc—from melancholy to joy.
  • Animation was created using AI tools like Sora and Pika, with prompt-engineering for consistency. I primarily used Sora, as it was integrated with my ChatGPT subscription.
  • Editing was done by me in DaVinci Resolve, where I aligned voice, visuals, and score into a cohesive whole.

Challenges we ran into

  • Matching emotional tone between AI-generated music and visuals
  • Maintaining consistency in the bard's appearance across shots using prompt-based animation tools—my biggest challenge due to limited tool access
  • Timing the transformation flash to feel magical and earned rather than abrupt
  • Building narrative tension and payoff with only two characters and no dialogue

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Delivering a cohesive, emotionally resonant short without spoken dialogue only music
  • Capturing a timeless artistic theme—humility and inspiration—in a brief, stylized format
  • Seamlessly blending multiple AI tools into a single creative voice
  • Learning and adapting these tools as a writer first, with only modest technical experience

What we learned

I learned that AI can enhance—not replace—artistic expression when used with purpose. Simplicity can be powerful. Emotional storytelling doesn’t require spectacle—just sincerity, rhythm, and clarity. Interestingly, the slight variations in the bard’s appearance across scenes gave him an “everyman” quality, which deepened the story’s meaning: this could be any artist.

What's next for The Cricket and the Bard

As an author of seven full-length science fiction novels and numerous novelettes and short stories, I plan to include this short in a larger anthology of Stout Tales fantasy shorts. My goal is to build toward a fully voice-acted, AI-enhanced video fiction series using tools like ElevenLabs and Sora.

This contest has introduced me to additional creative tools I’m excited to explore. I also hope to expand into festival submissions, interactive YouTube experiences, and a potential children’s book edition of this poem—with matching artwork.
