The Coterie

Inspiration

Taking into account the theme of “Reimagining Community,” the inspiration for The Coterie’s website stems from a desire to create a space for individuals & organizations in the locale to come together to meet local needs and share resources in the community. The Coterie’s mission is to connect and foster inclusive local community spaces. According to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, a coterie is “an intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose,” which strongly resonates with our mission to foster a sense of community and empower individuals and organizations with community-based resources. Our website’s layout is modeled after an online newspaper format as we wanted to showcase our design in a visually distinct way.

What it does

The Coterie has 5 main website pages - Home, Events, Resources, Connexions, and Care to Share. The Home page showcases each of the other pages especially featuring upcoming events in the locale, an About Us section, and a Reach Out! section. The Events Page is divided into events of an In-Person & Virtual nature. The Resources Page provides a list of vetted and carefully-curated community resources with a special focus on empowering marginalized/minority communities. The Connexions Page provides an outlet for individuals/organizations to connect with other like-minded parties regarding a specific theme (i.e. literacy initiatives, local produce, etc.). The Care to Share page is the Coterie’s way of allowing interested individuals/organizations to request and/or assist with a need (i.e., requesting assistance with a revamp of a local restaurant’s website, etc.).

Our team chose to create a website with a focus on connecting and fostering inclusive local community spaces.

Creating consistency and an overall style guide are integral to the design process.
