As we see and experience in the world, fast fashion is really a negative effect on our planet’s ecosystem. By designing MR effects for clothes, we contribute to the transformation from physical fast fashion to context-aware digital fashion, while aligning with individuals’ need for self-expression.

Inspiration

People getting more and more aware about climate-related problems. At the same time, the need for self-expression through clothing poses a great danger in the form of fast fashion. Jiayao and me also lives in Sweden, a country known for its love of nature, and for it's remarkable minimalistic style. We just need to add a little magic to the formula...

What it does

Our core idea is to provide visual effects on our attire, based on contextual camera feed, which can help us to dress differently every day, while our physical gardrobe remains small, and at the same time it gives a hand to express ourselves better. Later we are planning to implement weather-based clothing recommendations, with the combined power of camera feed, weather forecasting and AI. People would also be able to give feedback to each other's attire.

How We planned to build it

Our team planned to use 2D and 3D assets for MR filters, and also planned to build the prototype with ShapesXR. We were not sure how to make our effects to properly follow the user's movement, so we were considering to use Snapchat Lens Studio.

Challenges We ran into

We realised, that we won't be able to finish our prototype, due to external reasons (exams, illness, etc.). It was a hard decision, but also an important lesson. Despite this we are planning to build the prototype in the future, outside the scope of the challenge.

Accomplishments that We're proud of

  • amazing teamwork
  • open communication

What I learned

The process of finding a unique idea with my teammate that could have a big impact on people's lives was very enjoyable for me. Making UX-related decisions with my teammate was also a remarkable experience. I enjoyed experimenting with ShapesXR, but I need to learn more about more precise spatial placement of objects.

What's next for The Conscious Closet

Our stretch goal for this concept is an online platform of clothes MR effects, which entails various business opportunities:

  • the platform can provide AI-based personalized MR effects
  • the platform can sell a collection of physical clothes that are both eco-friendly and suit MR effects overlay.
  • normal individuals can upload their MR effect designs for sale. The user-uploaded context will be evaluated according to culture and ethics.
  • designers and artists can promote their MR effects.
  • companies can provide MR effects designed for the company’s culture and branding.
