Inspiration
The official City of Compton history page provides only a basic overview of the city's rich past. We wanted to create something more engaging, interactive, and accessible. Our goal was to showcase Compton's history through an immersive timeline filled with historical photos, important events, and stories of the many influential people who have shaped the city. We wanted residents and visitors alike to experience Compton's history in a way that is both educational and enjoyable.
What it does
Our website presents the history of Compton through an interactive timeline that allows users to explore the city's past chronologically. Along the way, visitors can discover historical photographs, learn about major events, and read about influential figures whose contributions have left a lasting impact on Compton. By combining visuals with historical information, we make learning about the city's history far more engaging than reading a traditional webpage.
How we built it
Building this project required extensive research. We searched across the internet for reliable historical sources, photographs, newspaper archives, and public records. One of the most time-consuming parts of the project was collecting information from different sources and organizing it into a format that could be displayed clearly on the website. We also spent a significant amount of time transcribing historical information so it could be presented in a clean, searchable, and interactive way.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was dealing with conflicting historical sources. Different websites and publications often presented different dates or accounts of the same events, making it difficult to determine the most accurate information. Another major obstacle was that many valuable resources were not available online. Some of the best historical records exist only in local books and archives, limiting our ability to verify and expand our research within the project's timeframe.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud that we brought this project to completion despite limited resources, long nights, and even unreliable internet connections. Every member of our team contributed in meaningful ways, whether through coding, researching, designing, brainstorming ideas, or testing the website. This project truly reflects the power of teamwork. None of us could have built it alone, and seeing everyone's contributions come together into a finished product is one of our greatest accomplishments.
What we learned
This project taught us that much of Compton's rich and complex history remains hidden within local libraries and physical archives. While online resources were helpful, they only told part of the story. We learned how important historical preservation and accessibility are. If given more time, we would spend additional time at the Compton Library researching local history books and transcribing valuable information so that more people can easily access and appreciate Compton's unique history.
What's next for Compton
This project is only the beginning. We hope to continue expanding the website by visiting the Compton Library, researching local history books, and incorporating additional verified historical information into the timeline. Our goal is to create the most comprehensive, accurate, and engaging online resource for Compton's history. We also plan to add more photographs, historical documents, interactive features, and stories from the community so future generations can better understand and appreciate the city's remarkable past.
