The Complete Guide to Content Capture in Meta Horizon

Inspiration

As creators in Meta Horizon, I noticed one of the most overlooked struggles wasn’t building worlds — it was showing them off. Many new developers asked, “How do I capture good footage of my world?” but the information was never in one place.
I wanted to create a clear, approachable guide that empowers every Horizon creator — from beginners to VR cinematographers — to capture their worlds in the best possible light.

What it does

This project is a complete guide to video capture in Meta Horizon, covering three main methods:

  • Horizon In-App Camera → quick, stable shots for trailers and social posts
  • Quest OS Capture → authentic POV footage directly from the headset
  • Desktop Editor + OBS → professional-quality, cinematic recordings

It includes:

  • A full written tutorial (hosted on GitHub)
  • A friendly walkthrough video explaining each method
  • Screenshots, tips, and best practices for smooth, high-quality results

I also collaborated with Proto_XR to create a remixable Horizon world — the Live Studio Kit — that gives creators a ready-to-go filming setup, with pre-configured cameras and optimized settings for trailers and shorts.

How I made it

  • Written Guide → Authored in Markdown, with screenshots and structured formatting for GitHub.
  • Video Tutorial → Scripted for voiceover, recorded in Horizon using the same capture methods I teach, and edited for clarity and pacing.
  • Remixable World → Built collaboratively in Horizon Worlds, with Proto_XR handling scripting and optimization, and Gungangoose focusing on design and camera flow.

Challenges I ran into

  • Ensuring accuracy: Capture methods in Horizon change over time, and some “unofficial” workflows exist — I had to carefully verify and test the methods included.
  • Balancing clarity with detail: The guide needed to be beginner-friendly without oversimplifying the technical steps.
  • World limitations: Handling timeouts, player limits, and UI cropping in OBS required workarounds that I documented for others.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Creating a single, comprehensive guide for Horizon video capture that didn’t exist before.
  • Making the workflow accessible, even for creators new to VR content.
  • Building the Live Studio Kit remixable world, which streamlines filming for anyone.
  • Combining technical instructions, design thinking, and approachable video storytelling into one cohesive resource.

What I learned

  • Clear documentation and visual aids make a huge difference in empowering creators.
  • Even small optimizations — like turning off comfort assistance or cropping OBS windows — can significantly improve content quality.
  • Collaboration between technical and creative roles leads to stronger, more user-friendly solutions.

What's next for The Complete Guide to Content Capture in Meta Horizon

  • Expanding the "Goose's Content Tips" series with advanced techniques (green screens, cinematic paths, multi-camera setups).
  • Adding tutorial shorts for quick tips, optimized for TikTok/Instagram.
  • Continuing to update the guide as Meta improves Horizon’s capture tools.
