Inspiration
Twitch chat is loud, fun and chaotic, but most of the time chat just watches the streamer play. We wanted to give chat a real role: a shared enemy to fight together, while the streamer's actual gameplay changes the fight. That is how the idea of a boss that fights back was born.
What it does
The Chat Hydra turns a Twitch chat into a raid party. Viewers attack a giant boss on the stream overlay just by chatting. Emotes and ALL CAPS hit harder, and !attack deals a big hit.
The twist is Chat vs the Streamer. The streamer has a control panel with three actions:
- I DIED: the boss heals 15% of its HP and taunts the streamer.
- I WON A ROUND: the boss loses 10% of its HP.
- CLUTCH: the boss is stunned for 5 seconds and chat damage is doubled.
Twitch events are mapped to boss effects: raids cause a mega damage wave, subs give a damage power-up, gift subs cause a meteor strike, and bits deal damage. A live leaderboard shows top chat damage, the last hitter becomes "Boss Slayer", the top damage dealer becomes "MVP", and a summary card appears when the boss is defeated. Then a bigger boss respawns.
Streamers can customize the boss name, emoji, max HP, damage values and taunt lines from the control panel, and the overlay updates live. The overlay works as an OBS Browser Source.
How we built it
The whole project was built from scratch in one Codex thread during the submission period, step by step:
- Scaffold (Node.js + TypeScript), Twitch chat connection and a mock chat mode.
- Boss logic, damage rules and the transparent overlay.
- Streamer actions, control panel, settings, Twitch events, leaderboard and taunts.
- Debugging, polish and documentation.
We described each step to Codex, ran the result, and pasted errors back so Codex could debug and fix its own code. Tech: Node.js, TypeScript, Express, WebSocket, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, Twitch chat and Twitch EventSub.
Challenges we ran into
- Keeping the control panel and overlay in sync. Codex helped us find a WebSocket reconnect problem and fix it.
- Making Twitch events testable without a live stream, so we added a full mock mode with buttons for raids, subs, gift subs, bits and streamer commands.
- Making the overlay readable and fun while many effects (damage numbers, taunts, stun, leaderboard) happen at once.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A complete, working "Chat vs Streamer" loop that runs end to end.
- A polished overlay: glowing HP bar, floating damage numbers with viewer names, taunts, leaderboard titles and a defeat summary card.
- Anyone can test it for free, with no paid APIs and no keys, using mock mode.
- Built by a first-time hackathon participant, in a few days, with Codex.
What we learned
- How to break a project into small Codex prompts and iterate with real errors and feedback.
- How Twitch chat, EventSub and OAuth fit together for a live stream tool.
- Testable demo modes matter as much as features.
What's next for The Chat Hydra
- Boss phases (angry and enraged), with visual changes.
- A weak-spot emote that deals triple damage each round.
- A Rally mode where many viewers act together for a bonus.
- A post-stream summary card streamers can share.
- Fully tested live EventSub for raids, subs and bits.
