Inspiration
After hearing of the hackathon, our group leader thought of creating an elite team from his school peers to tackle the coding marathon challenge. This resulted in Phantom Tech. After hitting a stumbling block with our first idea, our (brilliant) leader remembered meeting a Jamaican business owner who spent upwards of US$7000 for his traditional POS system.
This ridiculous cost inspired us to create a low-cost solution that small business owners could use to manage their inventory, sell goods and analyze data. This is CashCloud JA.
What it does
Using cloud-based storage and an internet browser, CashCloud allows users to create an account for their business. Once an account is created, users can create their inventory list, update their accounting info, and once that's in place, business can begin right away. All one needs is internet connection and a device capable of accessing the internet.
Users will utilize a trial period before choosing to subscribing to CashCloud, if they enjoy the service.
How we built it
We used HTML and php to build a demo of how CashCloud might work.
Challenges we ran into
While our team is comprised of superb people, we are all beginners in the coding field, with previous experiences only in Pascal and C. This made it hard to launch into creating our product straight away as we had to learn HTML and php methods before.
There was also some difficulty with reliable and speedy internet. This made it tricky to access online resources for learning and editing code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to say that one of our team members, Tae-Hyeong, stayed up for almost the entirety of the competition - almost 42 hours! Also, at least one member of our team was up and working throughout the event.
Even more impressive, Tae learned the nuances of php in less than a day! Simply amazing. The rest of the team also had to become fairly adept at HTML and CSS too. Talk about an awesome feat!
What we learned
Languages: HTML, php, JavaScript, CSS.
Also, we learned new means of tackling problems and solving them. (We've learned a lot : ) )
What's next for The Cash Cloud JA
If we win this competition and get sponsorship, we believe this product is a feasible business venture and would love to produce a working model of Cash Cloud. We believe Cash Cloud will be an affordable improvement for the numerous businesses in Jamaica that still use pen-and-paper means to perform inventory and sales.
