Inspiration

The inspiration for our website largely comes from similar websites we use in school as we thought that the way they format the information made it very easily digestible and visually appealing. So, by melding that general format with information about the carbon footprints of different forms of transportation to fit the theme of sustainability in cities, we got our inspiration.

What it does

The website presents information about the sustainability of different forms of transportation in cities in a fun, very easily digestible way utilizing images.

How we built it

We utilized HTML, javascript, CSS, python, and Flask on Visual Studio Code to create a website, and we utilized piskel to create our art.

Challenges we ran into

Because of the nature of our project where the coding of the different vehicles is very similar and needs many different variables, managing all of this in a coding language many of us were not very familiar with was a struggle. For a while we had trouble making the vehicles move offscreen in the proper direction, and having the text boxes follow them properly also was a challenge that let us understand HTML and CSS better.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The fact that we were able to create a functional website, learn an entirely new language and syntax-it was a very engaging process that had us work together, collaborate and overcome roadblocks. It brought us closer together as we made something we could grow to be proud of!

What we learned

Throughout the process of coding this website, there were many times when while scrubbing through the code, there were many instances of repetition and overused redundancy. Every time this happened, we would have to go through our project and make sure there were no interactions that could be difficult to work through in the future. We learned that we should first plan not just the idea, but the structure of the code in order to avoid events like this in the future.

What's next for The Carbon Commute

We will probably use a similar type of format in our future projects, however they will likely be about different themes.
