The Broke
Inspiration
This project draws from my personal experience with modern urban loneliness. Despite having more solitary time and entertainment options than ever, many of us feel increasingly anxious and disconnected. Regular distractions provide only temporary relief, failing to give us genuine purpose. Through this film, I wanted to explore how we can move from passive existence to active living.
What it does
"The Broke" tells the story of a woman escaping Earth's pressures for lunar solitude, where she discovers that true fulfillment comes not from running away, but from creating beauty wherever you are. The narrative follows her journey from escape to emptiness to eventual awakening when she encounters a rabbit cultivating flowers in barren soil.
How we built it
We developed this through an AI-powered workflow, starting with detailed storyboarding inspired by Coraline's visual aesthetic. Using multiple AI generation tools, we iteratively created scene visuals that closely matched our descriptive prompts. The final video combines these AI-generated sequences with careful editing and sound design to create a cohesive emotional arc.
Challenges we ran into
Translating simple yet profound emotional themes into visual language proved difficult. Many subtle emotions - the emptiness of freedom, the moment of realization - were challenging to convey through AI generation. We went through numerous storyboard revisions to find the right balance between showing and telling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a complete narrative with strong emotional resonance using AI tools. The visual style consistently reflects our Coraline-inspired aesthetic vision, and the key moment of flower-giving carries the intended emotional weight. Most importantly, we maintained artistic control throughout the AI-assisted process.
What we learned
True creativity flourishes within constraints - both technical and environmental. We discovered that AI tools work best when guided by a clear artistic vision, not as replacement for it. The process taught us that meaningful stories can emerge from personal struggles, and that sometimes the simplest narratives carry the deepest messages.
What's next for The Broke
We're exploring expanding this into a series examining different forms of modern disconnection and rediscovery. We also plan to refine our AI-assisted workflow to handle more complex emotional storytelling, potentially incorporating subtle character animation to enhance expressiveness.
