Inspiration
Inspired by the only piece of hardware that we were given and our love for solving puzzles and escape games. We decided to make a puzzle box that was interactive and fun to do. We decided to challenge ourselves to use a coding language that we're both new at to see what we can create in 24 hours.
What it does
This box allows you to play with the different modules on the Grove's beginner kit, from light to sound to accelerometer, it's simple child's play. Complete the levels and score points, all instructions are provided on the OLED display. If you complete the challenges, you get a super-secret surprise. ;)
How we built it
We built this using the Grove's Beginner Arduino kit, a very old Thinkpad, stolen duct tape, monster's energy can box, and a lot of Googling.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into was recording the state of a button when an LED turned on. Although this seems simple in principle, the nuances of using Arduino made this harder to implement. Instead, we used this to our advantage and found a workaround.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to come up with an idea and fully complete the challenge was our biggest accomplishment. We're both new to coding (one of us absolutely hates it), but between the two to have something to demo is a big accomplishment and we are very proud of ourselves. We managed to code the screen to display live readings from the accelerometer and the rotary potentiometer to give people a chance at passing the level.
What we learned
We learned that we are actually more capable than we thought and that Arduino can be really fun. We learned how to program and exploit the existing code and put them together to create something fun and engaging.
What's next for The Box
We would love to create a fully-fledged escape box with a (slightly nasty) surprise when you lose. Come try out our demo box for a little bit of fun.
