This project is the trailer of the mini web-series. The Bones Remain, a reinterpretation of the White Bone Spirit chapter from Journey to the West, imagined as a dreamlike, violent meditation on illusion, belief, and inner conflict. We were inspired by the heightened surrealism of Jibaro from Love, Death + Robots, the sacred violence in Buddhist art, and the quiet dread found in Tarkovsky’s films.
Everything was created using just Midjourney, Pixverse, and Dreamina, no 3D or VFX tools. That limitation became part of the challenge: How to make something visceral and emotionally coherent using only prompts and timing. I leaned heavily into controlling light, texture, and movement across platforms to keep it all feeling like one fevered vision.
What I learned in the process was how much can be said through visual rhythm alone, when a character’s robe moves a certain way, or when a glow lingers too long in a certain shot. The hardest part was balancing all the sacred imagery with something darker and stranger, without turning it into pure spectacle.
At its heart, this is a story about stripping things down, about confronting what’s left when all disguises and illusions are gone. That’s what Journey to the West has always meant to me, and I hope this version brings out something new in it.
