Inspiration
The game takes inspiration from various games, using a similar aim system to the iOS mobile game Angry Birds, while also utilizing an omnidirectional movement system similar to the arcade game, Asteroids. The time-slow effect is also reminiscent of mechanics found in VR games like Blade & Sorcery, and SUPERHOT--all of which are games I enjoy and found to have interesting game mechanics that could work well with one another.
What it does
The project is a video game, but the unique core mechanics and game loop of it are what make the game special. What the game does is you're able to control a living bomb humanoid, flying through a mysterious abyss with various obstacles to block your path and come in your way. The objective is to get as high as possible before eventually getting a 'Game Over!' screen, but what makes it special is its omnidirectional quick-time event-esque aiming style and its time-slow ability, allowing you to choose whichever way you please to enjoy the game. Whether that be playing as boldly as possible and seeing how fast your reaction time is, or going for the high score.
How we built it
I used Unity to build the game inside, writing in C+, while the sprites were made manually and drawn by hand and animated in Adobe Photoshop, later to be imported as a .png sequence.
Challenges we ran into
There was lots of errors regarding problems I didn't initially foresee--for one, there was more animations planned to be added to the sprite of the main character, but due to various issues regarding the timing of when the sprites were supposed to be implemented and getting them to properly display, it was ultimately scrapped and replaced with a more simple idle animation to allow more time to spend on other parts of the game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making the aiming system work properly, along with making sure the player's character not only generates a particle system explosion that propels them along, but that also rotates depending on the angle that you choose. The player character also rotates depending on what angle you blast yourself towards.
