Inspiration

The project was inspired by the atmospheric tension of old apartment buildings, late-night urban loneliness, and the haunting mystery behind the TRPG scenario The Tenant Who Died. We wanted to translate that unsettling feeling—dim lights, dripping water, and an unseen presence behind closed doors—into a cinematic storytelling format.

What it does

The Blue Room is a narrative video adaptation that reimagines the 5B incident through a modern, anime-influenced visual style. It introduces key characters, builds suspense through environmental storytelling, and guides viewers through the unraveling of a supernatural disappearance.

How we built it

We combined character-driven scriptwriting, scene design, and AI-assisted visual generation to recreate the apartment’s eerie atmosphere. Each shot was constructed with careful lighting, color control, and animation cues to maintain a consistent mood. The workflow included drafting, visual iteration, voice-over planning, and timing each segment for pacing.

Challenges we ran into

Maintaining stylistic consistency across AI-generated visuals was a major challenge. Ensuring adult proportions, keeping character designs stable between shots, and controlling lighting were ongoing difficulties. Another challenge was translating the nonlinear TRPG plot into a coherent, suspenseful video structure without losing the essence of player-driven discovery.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a unified visual language that blends Japanese animation aesthetics with horror-thriller pacing. We also managed to reinterpret the TRPG story into a compelling narrative while preserving the core mystery and emotional tension of the original module.

What we learned

We learned how crucial iterative refining is when working with AI visuals—small adjustments in prompts, proportions, and composition dramatically affect coherence. Additionally, we gained experience in adapting interactive narratives into linear cinematic experiences while preserving player intent and atmosphere.

What's next for The Blue Room

We plan to expand the story into a multi-episode format, explore additional mysteries within the apartment complex, introduce deeper character arcs, and potentially create an interactive version that allows viewers to explore key scenes at their own pace.
