📼 The Blockbuster Video (Unofficial)
🎬 Inspiration
The idea for The Blockbuster Video was born out of a deep love for retro culture and a desire to recreate that irreplaceable feeling of wandering the aisles of a Friday night video store. As a kid growing up in the '90s and early 2000s, the local Blockbuster wasn’t just a rental shop—it was a portal to adventure, horror, comedy, and dreams.
Reimagining that experience in VR, optimized for mobile, felt like the perfect way to connect nostalgia with modern technology. It was also a chance to create a social space where storytelling, exploration, and fun collide—just like they used to in those aisles.
🍿 What it does
The Blockbuster Video (Unofficial) is a multiplayer mobile VR experience where players can:
- Explore a fully interactive Blockbuster-inspired video store
- Collect, trade, and return VHS tapes to unlock mini-games and secret scenes
- Complete movie-themed quests and trivia challenges
- Unlock store upgrades that reflect progression (e.g., new video racks, themed sections, arcade machines)
- Share rewards and discoveries with friends, encouraging social interaction and replayability
🛠️ How we built it
- Tools Used: Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest (Mobile-first optimizations), Blender for 3D assets, and Audacity for retro sound design
- Design Process: We started with core memories—movie bins, popcorn counters, worn-out rental cards—and mapped them into modular components for interactive use.
- Development Focus: We prioritized low-poly visuals and mobile-friendly interaction mechanics to ensure performance across devices, especially in social play settings.
🧩 Challenges we ran into
- Optimization: We had to balance nostalgia-packed detail with performance, especially for mobile.
- Interaction Density: Designing meaningful, replayable activities that also supported real-time social interaction took many iterations.
- Sound & Ambience: Getting that “authentic Blockbuster” sound—beeps, hums, crowd chatter—required original recordings and post-processing.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designed a working Blockbuster computer and register system that players can role-play with
- Created a popcorn bin, VHS tape slot, and trivia system that feels tactile and social
- Built a progression loop through tape collection, unlocking upgrades that change the look and feel of the store
- Hit our target for under-20 second load time on mobile
📚 What we learned
- Community Design: Players love tasks that feel collaborative—like returning tapes together or competing in trivia.
- Mobile-first design is not just about visuals—it’s about how people hold the device, move in small spaces, and return often.
- Nostalgia works best when interactive. Tapping into memory is powerful, but giving players a reason to keep coming back is what makes it lasting.
