Inspiration

For over 20 years, sound has been my lifeline. As a kid, I was drawn to the strange beauty of tuning forks, Enya, and resonant tones—long before I understood why they moved me. Over time, I realized these sounds weren’t just interesting; they were essential. They helped me survive and manage the weight of ADHD, depression, and PTSD. Music became my medicine, my language, and my anchor.

What It Does

The Binaural Reset is a free sound therapy web app built to help others the way sound helped me. It combines binaural beats and ambient audio textures with simple visuals and an intuitive interface for adjusting frequencies and learning the basics of sound and resonance. An AI guide named Lumi gently supports users with emotional insight and grounding tips—offering care, not just code.

How I Built It

I created this solo, using p5.js for interactive sine wave visuals, along with Bolt, which helped me learn a little jQuery and Bootstrap for structure and responsiveness. Lumi, the AI voice of compassion in the app, is powered by ElevenLabs and GPT-4.1 mini. This wasn’t just about building an app—it was about crafting a healing space using whatever tools I had, fueled by a deep emotional mission.

The Real Challenges

The hardest parts weren’t technical errors—they were the emotional mountains: staying focused through executive dysfunction, finishing something so quickly and last minute (just found out about this), working through panic attacks, and believing that this project mattered when 100,000+ other people are also hoping to be seen. Yes, there were bugs and mobile issues, but the true debugging happened inside me.

Accomplishments I'm Proud Of

I didn’t just make an app. I made a space for healing. I proved to myself that I could channel pain into peace—and offer that peace to others, for free.

What I Learned

That "vibe coding" is about learning proper communication (if a logical, non-emotional being doesn't get you, who will?) and patience isn't about waiting; it's about breathing through every moment when you want to give up. That technology can be deeply human if you let it be. And that healing is nonlinear, but possible.

What’s Next for The Binaural Reset

  • Add percussive instruments, more ambience, maybe some synthesizers, kotos, and instruments... more richer, deeper textures.
  • I want people to be able to record their own affirmations in the app, but I didn't have time to debug before the deadline! I will this week, though!
  • Refine the visual and audio design
  • Improve accessibility and mobile compatibility
  • Fix lingering bugs and performance issues
  • Build a safe, mindful community around the app
  • Explore a donation-based or subscription option—only if it sustains the mission
