Inspiration
Our inspiration came from Hurricane Milton, where countless individuals struggled to receive timely assistance. We wanted to create a system that could save lives by providing critical disaster alerts and resources in real time.
What it does
Disaster Alerts help users stay safe during emergencies like hurricanes, floods, forest fires, and more. It detects when someone is in a disaster zone, sends pre-alerts for predicted events, and offers optimized evacuation routes while avoiding affected areas. Families can stay connected and the app also connects users to nearby emergency services.
How we built it
We built the system using a React-based web app integrated with multiple APIs, such as weather for disaster detection. On the hardware side, we used Arduino and Tinkercad for prototyping, with LED color codes and sound notifications for accessible disaster alerts.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating the frontend, backend, and hardware components was a significant challenge. Combining APIs with real-time data while ensuring smooth communication between software and hardware required problem-solving and creative collaboration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a functional web app and hardware prototype using APIs and technologies we had never worked with before.
What we learned
We gained experience in API integration, hardware-software communication, and teamwork under pressure.
What's next
We aim to expand the app to include more disaster-specific services, such as detailed rescue instructions and localized support networks. Our goal is to partner with emergency organizations to provide even more robust assistance and save more lives during crises.
