Inspiration

We, the hackers from large companies, know exactly - It's always the little interactions in our day that keep us going. Bumping into each other while grabbing that third cup of coffee the day, or be it complementing your buddies "Back To The Future" shirt. These core moments are what differentiates, an in theory competent team, from an actually productive team. These are the sensations that get you going and motivate you to put in the hard work.

As if keeping up with all your friends hasn't been enough of a challenge yet, the sudden shift to remote work has separated all of us even more. The danger of isolation is more present than ever. We firmly believe that remote work plays an imminent role in our future work lives, but how can we avoid the apparent downsides of it and maybe even profit from the extra space? How can we stay connected to our colleagues and how are we going to celebrate the epic things, no matter the location?

What it does

With our solution "EVALPAL " we want to forge the ideal working environment and climate for hybrid teams. We see a very big demand for a more efficient and meaningful way of giving and receiving feedback to your colleagues.

EVALPAL is your friend when it comes to evaluating, praising and checking-up on your team. Our solution currently offers three types of messages: Feedback, praise and a health-check. All packaged within a sleek and minimalistic UI. The health-check is our way to show others our support and to keep track of our teams overall well being. Not everyone wants to talk about their issues, simply being there can make a significant impact.

With EVALPAL we promote the positive feedback culture that is so detrimental to compete with the worlds most innovative teams. We motivate your team to help others with a fun reputation system. The implementation of the reputation system can and should vary from team to team, because after all every functions differently, which is why we are leaving that open to the team administrator. Perhaps the administrator could award the coolest employees with a special parking spot or get them some beer. We want to give our users the option to publicly keep their feedback, as a sort of reference, in their personal portfolio.

Our app runs on every platform and is extremely easy to set up. To make EVALPAL as accessible as possible for you, you can access it over the menu bar. How we built it

The mock-ups where made using Adobe XD, our illustrations where mainly made and edited in Adobe Illustrator. For our application we used Electron which we combined with Tailwind CSS to forge an appealing user experience. Our backend is hosted on AWS.

Challenges we ran into

We were very new to the concepts of Electron and so we had to learn the hard way it was not suited for multi page applications. We had some trouble representing data reactively onto to the frontend but are all overwhelmingly happy with our product. Oh yeah and let's not forget about the sleep ...

Accomplishments that we're proud of

By midnight we had come up with our solution to our problem of choice, so we got straight to architectural design and constructing our first mock-ups. Implemented UI just like planned in mock-up. Functional Sign Up/In system.

What we learned

I speak for all of us in the team when I say that the learning effect was massive at this event. Like I mentioned we were all new to Electron so we had the opportunity to get a very solid grasp on the fundamentals.

What's next for EVALPAL ?
