Inspiration - A revolunationary step to raise a voice and fight inflation on behalf of consumers
Inflation has been worsening our human life for the last few years in the most critical way. One of the clearest burdens appears to be groceries prices; for example, eggs, meat, vegetables, butter, etc... As these commodities go up, people's budgets increase, leading to poor living conditions as they can't buy their most basic necessities. Therefore, we came up with our website that browses all over the main grocery stores' websites and provides users with the most reasonable prices of the item they want to buy among other stores in around 1 to 2 weeks.
What it does
The website will provide users with a list of grocery items, and they can choose one of those items they are interested in buying. The system will then show a table comparing prices between certain grocery stores, like Target, Whole Foods, and ShopRite. Additionally, the system will offer users the lowest item price within those stores. The website will store past data on the prices at the end of each week and provide users with price changes of these items in a week.
How we built it
We started by creating the website with HTML. We then scrape the websites of the stores with BeautifulSoup.
Challenges we ran into
Since we're super beginners with different backgrounds in coding languages, we don't know how to create a website with HTML or write codes in C++. Therefore, we need to start the project with the knowledge we learned from the languages we code and transform them into a communal one.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our whole day of hacking and learning loads of stuff we've never learned in classes or anywhere. We were pretty clueless in the beginning, but we ended up learning a lot and creating a website of our practical brand new ideas to help individuals adapt to changes in the economy.
What we learned
We learned that we could gather information from websites by scraping them. Other than using an API, we are introduced to BeautifulSoup by a mentor. We worked on it and coded our website to present an overview of our product.
