Inspiration
As mechanical engineering students, we spend countless hours in university lecture halls with integrated tablet‑arm desks that offer minimal usable surface area. Attempting to fit our laptop, calculator, notebook, and technical references on these cramped surfaces made workflow inefficient and uncomfortable. We wanted to create something functional that blends portability with ergonomics, directly addressing the space limitations faced by thousands of students worldwide.
What We Learned
Integration beats add‑ons: Rather than creating a desk add-on we chose to combine the extension with a laptop case to avoid carrying extra heavy gear.
The strength of materials: We learned about honeycomb composites for lightweight strength and incorporated woodworking techniques for smooth slide mechanisms.
Magnetic closure engineering: Neodymium magnets provide a strong hold while maintaining a clean aesthetic!
Problem
In many university lecture halls, the cramped tablet‑arm desks limit usable space. This constraint especially impacts students who need:
- Multiple tools open at once (laptop, mouse, notes, reference books)
- Quick transitions between written work and on‑screen tasks
Over time, this friction hinders workflow efficiency and overall academic performance.
Solution
AXO is a modular desk‑extension system designed to expand functional workspace within limited environments.
Key Components:
- Tri‑fold Support Stand: Attaches to the top of the laptop display, unfolding into a rigid triangular structure for optimal viewing angles and ventilation.
- Slide‑Out Work Surface: Integrated into the laptop base and slides laterally to provide extra area for a mouse, tablet, or notebook. Secured via concealed neodymium magnets when not in use. Together, these turn any cramped classroom desk into a stable, portable workstation without occupying additional room or disturbing neighboring seats.
How It Works
- Tri‑Fold Stand: Folds flat when not in use; quickly deploys into $\triangle$ configuration for stability and improved ergonomics. Made from lightweight honeycomb composite for strength and airflow.
- Slide‑Out Desk Extension: Runs on an internal track mechanism with smooth linear bearings. The platform is finished with reclaimed wood veneer for sustainability and professional look.
Mathematically, we considered torque balance on the laptop hinge to ensure that the addition of the trifold stand and lateral extension did not cause tipping:
$$
\tau_{net} = \tau_{stand} + \tau_{extension} \leq \tau_{limit}
$$
Additionally for the angle of the drawer we used the following equations: Horizontal Distance (X) = L × cos(θ) Vertical/Forward Distance (Y) = L × sin(θ)
